The rain hit us. Lightly at first, then a little harder. Yet, there were blue skies all around promising the rain would be short lived. Still my Nikon was exposed. I covered it up using my bright green winter hat as it continued to snap a photo every two seconds. The rain sprinkled on for another 15 minutes, then stopped. I’m glad we stuck it out.

I wrote the background track a long time ago. It’s a song called Move, available on iTunes, here.

The Lobby

I saw her from the corner of my eye. She rushed quickly down the stairs. I some how forgot about her in those split seconds and continued my courtyard stroll, taking up the whole walkway. She ran past me with a quick side jump. Her hair wet, danced in the morning air. I saw a bruise on her left thigh just below the cuff of her shorts. She had long beautiful legs. I had yet to see her face and in all likelihood wouldn’t. She was moving too fast and in the wrong direction. But then, she reached the top stair just short of the hotel lobby and turned with the biggest smile and blew the biggest kiss up and off into the distance. I turned, intrigued to know whom this fair gift belonged. Standing on a third floor balcony was a handsome long-haired man. He wore a towel, smiling infinitely, returned the gesture. I smiled and silently laughed, gladly oblivious to both of them. My gaze turned back towards the girl. Her long legs had carried her into the parking lot. Then I lost sight. I continued on to the right, just past the doorless, open air lobby. I stumbled sleepily to the door marked laundry. The end.

The Surrounding Canvas, Gosh

Well, I don’t know. I don’t know how to begin. The surrounding canvas, maybe? The way I felt? What my eyes saw and my mind perceived? Either way, it was dark. The trees swayed far above my head. The air turbulent and unknowingly anxious for the sun to rise. I didn’t want it to end. The wind was warm and seemed to permeate troubled emotions buried so far down, stretching so far back that reasons elude. Yet their noise was dying down. Their voices had quieted to a dull roar. The mind has little power here, I mused, among the swaying trees and warm winds.

I listened on. I know of a rumbling river nearby, I saw it earlier in the sunshine. The darkness consumes it, but hidden in the wind, it is there. I can feel it. I picture it glistening in the moonlight, if there was moon this night. And then, beneath me is the ground. The warm comfortable ground. It is covered in dead fall, releasing sweet smells of pine and of spruce; I welcome this truce. At minds last waking synapse, I stretch my gaze to the cloudless, starless sky; I leave this at last to your imaginational eye.

Time Lapse: The Eclipsing Moon 12.10.11

I couldn’t sleep, I was too excited. The alarm went off. I “woke” at 4:00am. Made tea. Ate some eggs. Packed up all my gear and biked through the sleepy streets of Seattle. I was weighed down by a massive tripod, a 300mm lens, and a backpack full of extra layers. It. Was. Cold. Seattle cold feels colder than Montana cold. It was a beautifully clear morning and the eclipse had begun. The outer fringe of the moon was darkening. I biked like mad.

Just up the street from Pikes Place Market, I arrived at my friends downtown condo. I dropped off my bike, collected the roof key and I ran up to the deck on the roof. The moon was in plain view. I quickly setup the gear and began photographing this magnificent celestial event. Seattle gave me a 40 minute window before the clouds rolled in. Very pleased I am. Very pleased.

Super special note: watch with your best headphones. The soundtrack is so dreamy.

I spent the evening last night drinking scotch and playing music with a very talented violinist.
